More about King David Schools
King David aims to deliver an excellent general education together with the study of Hebrew and Jewish Studies and to produce graduates who are menschen, confident and equipped to pursue any opportunity they wish to, who are proud of their Jewish heritage and its traditions, who have a love for learning, and a determination to contribute to their society.
The schools write the Independent Examination Board (IEB) examinations for Matriculation and the pass rates are historically very high with pupils often amongst the top-ranked, nationwide. King David Schools have consistently been ranked in the top 2 feeder schools to the University of the Witwatersrand.
Since 1948, King David Schools under the auspices of the South African Board of Jewish Education (SABJE) have been at the forefront of Jewish education in South Africa and have served as the primary Jewish community educational organisation.
At the King David Schools Jewish roots form the backdrop for all decisions moving forward. While running the schools steadfastly along traditional Orthodox lines, students from all Jewish walks of life are accepted.
The school aims to instil a love for Jewish heritage in its students through both formal and informal methods. Learners, through Hebrew, Jewish Studies, Jewish History, Torah learning and Tefillah, are given the basic tools and knowledge to help cultivate their Jewish identity. Through the observance of the Chaggim, commemorations and celebrations, community outreach projects and shabbatonim run by the Department of informal Jewish Education (DIJE), learners develop a love and deep-rooted passion for Judaism that transcends the classroom and inspires them long after leaving the hallways. The recently established Soul Team actively brings fresh Jewish educational initiatives into the schools in a holistic way. It is the mandate of the Soul Team, not only to share knowledge on a formal basis and to implement this ethos within the schools to students, staff and parents.
King David schools are committed as an organisation to the State of Israel, its continued success, legitimacy and the role the state plays in the lives of the Jews in the diaspora. While an individual’s political ideologies might differ, King David Schools imbues in students a love and unwavering support of the State.
King David Schools endeavour at all times to offer students the best sporting opportunities possible. The school emphasises the role of sport in education through effective, well-rounded physical education, building self-esteem and confidence suitable to the individual.
