Online Bio-Research
For the first time in Israel, school students are undertaking scientific research and sitting Bagrut (matriculation) exams on-line.
Joint teams of students in Grades 11 and 12 from 38 schools around the country are studying together on a unique World ORT Kadima Mada program. Currently, some 1,500 students, divided into small work groups, are undertaking joint biological research, writing an investigative paper and sitting exams on-line. This is all part of a ground breaking educational concept that combines the study of biology and acquisition of 21st century skills through using internet-based technological tools and a virtual learning platform.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, World ORT Kadima Mada has implemented this innovative BioResearch program among students majoring in biology at the highest level of 5 units. Of all the sciences, biology is the most popular among school students sitting Bagrut exams. The syllabus includes theoretical and practical study as well as investigative research, observations and conclusions. Students are expected to prepare a concluding research paper in the form of a scientific publication.
Based on the above syllabus, World ORT Kadima Mada developed the pioneering On-line ‘BioResearch’ study program which is being implemented in cooperation with the biology department of the Ministry of Education. Not only do school students study entirely through the internet, they also undertake their studies in teams made up of students from two different schools. A high level of involvement is necessary and teachers and students connect with each other via the internet using a wide range of different on-line learning methods.
The different study tools incorporated within the program enable students to acquire 21st century skills through this virtual learning community. The external evaluation undertaken on this program shows the direct relation between the level of involvement in study and high exam results.
To date over 3,000 school students have taken part in this program. Due to its high success rate, the Ministry of Education is considering expanding the program to include other Bagrut study tracks.
