Promoting interdisciplinary awareness in a technologically rich environment
Today’s world of easily accessible information and rapidly developing technologies makes it necessary to develop thought processes different from the ones traditionally taught in schools. New skills need to be developed and one of the most significant of these is the ability to think in an interdisciplinary manner and absorb information from a variety of sources.
It is claimed that in order to find solutions to the social/political/intellectual and financial problems of the world, it is preferable to focus on a better understanding of the interaction between the different fields rather than accumulate subject matter pertaining to each individual discipline.
In addition, the approach to study has changed from that of individual learning to group learning grounded in social and cultural norms. This approach is supported by today’s technology which allows for different types of joint interaction. In order to develop their interdisciplinary study techniques, the school students taking part in this program investigate a specific topic (such as ‘revolution’) from several angles (for instance history, science, art and geography). They are required to respond to broad-based questions that cross several disciplines and incorporate joint study activities in technology based learning communities.
The program is taking place in 3 junior high schools over a period of 3 years and includes teacher training on interdisciplinary instruction and professional development courses for teachers who are currently masters of a single study topic.
