ORT Vocational Training Center, Yekaterinburg

Since its founding in 2005 at the Yekaterinburg Jewish Community Center  “Synagogue,” the ORT Vocational Training Center has educated over 3,500 participants. It began with programs for youth and working adults, but in recent years its focus has shifted to seniors and teachers.

The Center works closely with the Jewish Cultural Center “Menorah,” and collaborates with SMART J to expand access to learning tools and digital empowerment. Its programming is uniquely designed to address the needs of older learners, educators, and families by combining practical education with community-building.

Program Activities & Goals

Programs serve seniors aged 55+, teachers from Jewish and secular institutions, families seeking digital guidance, and community members interested in open education formats. Participants benefit from personalized instruction and a welcoming, intergenerational environment.

The flagship course, “Brain Training for 55+,” launched in 2023, is structured into three levels and uses mental arithmetic to improve cognitive function. Participants advance after passing assessments and gain valuable memory, focus, and reasoning skills. Another major initiative, “Active Aging in the Information Society,” combines healthy lifestyle education with digital skills to help seniors stay connected and independent in a tech-driven world.

The Center also supports educators through specialized seminars. Topics include how to foster cognitive development in older adults and how to personalize instruction for schoolchildren based on their strengths—an innovative concept for Russian schools. These seminars promote inclusion and human-centered pedagogy across the region.

Innovation & Development

The Center embraces innovation in both content and delivery. Teachers are trained to shift away from rigid models and toward flexible, student-centered learning. Through SMART J, the Center offers technical support, equipment access, and parent engagement sessions focused on neurocognitive development.

Its inclusive design ensures that all learners—regardless of age or learning style—can succeed. Strength-based approaches, assistive technologies, and group learning help foster a community rooted in empowerment and shared growth.

The Center’s key programs are ongoing and expanding. Currently, the focus remains on deepening teacher training, broadening the reach of senior education programs, and strengthening the network of partner institutions across Russia.
