Shlabim - Education at Home for Sick Children
World ORT Kadima Mada provides ‘Shlabim’ educational services to sick or disabled children who cannot attend school. Continuing their education at home helps to ensure that they are not missing too much from the national curriculum due to health issues.
Every year in the State of Israel there are thousands of sick children, including those with special needs. These children are absent from school and spend their days either at home or in Ministry of Health community care centers.
World ORT Kadima Mada is the formal provider of the Ministry of Education’s “Shlabim” service which is extended to children in all sectors of the country’s population. This program is operated under the jurisdiction of the ‘free education for all sick children in Israel who are at home for over 21 days’ law’. Israel is one of the few countries in the world that provide this type of service.
The main aims of this program include trying to ensure an educational continuum for these school students, encouraging a daily routine beneficial to their overall well-being and facilitating their return to school upon recuperation.
A personalized educational study program is formulated for each house-bound sick child by a qualified World ORT Kadima staff member, in collaboration with the teachers at school. It is constructed according to the child’s needs, taking into account medical limitations and academic ability and knowledge prior to illness.
World ORT Kadima Mada’s qualified teachers visit the children at home according to the needs identified in their personalized study programs and help them study the material being covered by their peers. Some of the educational material is taught by World ORT Kadima Mada’s teachers on-line and is accessed synchronously by the children through an advanced technological distance learning platform which is installed by World ORT Kadima Mada in their homes. Some of the special needs children served by the program also qualify for physical assistance during study periods and para-medical treatment.
